Perk Up!

Everyone likes a good cup of coffee, right? (If you don't, then what the heck are you doing here?) This island is devoted to my favorite beverage! It's my dad's fault I love coffee so much. He started sharing latte's with me when I was 13 and I've been addicted ever since. Personally, I prefer a good hazelnut mocha (made best by Dayton's very own Higher Grounds) for something warm, and a mocha chiller (a specialty of Gloria Jean's) for something cold. But enough about me. Have fun exploring Java Island!

NOTE: This site best veiwed with a cup of Java

Garfield is one of my favorite comics, and he loves his coffee! Check out these funnies...they'll perk you up!

Coffee Talk

Cafe' Au Lait
A combination of equal parts of hot coffee and hot or steamed milk. A popular breakfast treat in France, it is often served in large bowls or cups.

Cafe' Latte
A combination of espresso and heated or steamed milk, this is the italian version of Cafe' Au Lait.

Mocha
A yummy combination of chocolate and coffee...my favorite!

Cappuccino
A mixture of hot espresso, foamed or steamed milk. Serve with a sprinkle of cocoa or cinnamon on top.

Espresso
Finely ground coffee which is placed in a special coffee maker that forces steam or hot water quickly through the grounds, resulting in a very robust-flavored drink. Often served in small one-ounce cups.

Caffeine is my shepherd; I shall not doze.
It maketh me to wake in green pastures:
It leadeth me beyond the sleeping masses.
It restoreth my buzz:
It leadeth me in the paths of consciousness for its name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of addiction,
I will fear no Equal (tm): For thou art with me;
thy cream and thy sugar they comfort me.
Thou preparest a carafe before me in the presence of The Starbucks:
Thou anointest my day with pep; my mug runneth over.
Surely richness and taste shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the House of Mocha's forever.

The Perfect Cup of Coffee

  1. Use fresh, cold spring water.
  2. A good quality coffee should be used in the correct proportions of coffee to water. The standard ratio for one serving or cup is 2 tablespoons coffee to 3/4 cups (6 ounces) of water. For extra strength coffee, use 2 tablespoons coffee to 1/2 cup (4 ounces) of water. Double-strength brew can be made by using 4 tablespoons coffee to 3/4 cups (6 ounces) of water.
  3. Brew coffee according to coffeemaker directions. Never use boiling water to make coffee...unless you like the taste of burnt coffee!
  4. Keep your coffeepot and grinder spotlessly clean. Clean the coffeepot with a mixture of baking soda and water, and rinse thoroughly.
  5. Store freshly brewed coffee in an insulated thermos or carafe. To preheat, fill thermos with boiling or extremely hot water and let site with the lid on until the coffee is finished brewing. Discard water from thermos - fill with coffee. (Try warming your mugs this way, too - keeps the coffee warmer longer!)

Coffee Thoughts

NEVER re-use coffee grounds!

DON'T reheat brewed coffee!

NEVER let coffee boil!

IT IS NOT a good idea to use a sock for a make-shift filter...
